Pearl grading system: AAA-A

The beauty of pearls rests in part on the uniqueness of each item. Although two pearls may be similar, as any item that is produced by nature, the shape, size, colour and condition of each pearl is unique.

In order to clearly evaluate and grade pearls when purchasing or selling, certain factors must be considered and agreed upon. Unfortunately, the pearl industry has yet to agree on a standard grading system although at this time, the AAA-A system is widely used by major pearl manufacturers and pearl distributors in North America to grade cultured pearls.

Pearls are graded according to several characteristics:

Lustre
Lustre is the intense brightness which is a result of the light reflecting off the numerous layers of nacre. Superior quality nacre leads to an increased lustre.

Shape
The spherical shape is the rarest and most desirable. Unique shapes such as tear drop, oval, baroque and pear-shaped are also preferred.

Colour
Pearl colours are dependent on the type of oyster that produces the pearl. Pearl colours can range from cream, pink and grey to black, green and blue. Colour choice is a matter of preference, but certainly important is the richness of the colour that is evenly distributed all through the pearl.

Size
Size is not an indication of quality although larger pearls are more expensive since they are more difficult to cultivate.

Surface
Blemishes are part of the nature of pearls; a result of sea particles brushing up against the surface of the pearl as it forms. Fewer imperfections indicate a higher quality, more valuable pearl.

AAA-A Pearl Grading System
In this grading system, AAA represents the very highest quality. Although not a single characteristic can represent the worth of a pearl, lustre and surface perfection are considered the most important factors when grading pearls.

AAA grade
Indicates a virtually flawless pearl. Lustre is exceptional, much like a mirror. Surface is virtually free of blemishes (95% of surface is free from defects).

AA grade
Lustre is superb, a clear reflection. Surface of the pearl has some very slight blemishes (75% of the surface will be free from defects)

A+ grade
Lustre is very good, a clear reflection. Surface is very slightly blemished.

A grade
Lustre is good, clear reflection. Surface has some very slight blemishes.

A1 grade
Lustre is good, clear reflection. Surface is slightly blemished.
